Wild boar

Hunting season: 01.01 – 31.12

Wild boars live in sounders; adult males join the sounder only during mating season, which lasts from November until January. Wild boar, excepting sow with piglets, may be hunted all year round. The best time for wild boar hunting is the snowy period during which it is possible to identify the location of wild boars by their tracks. The light conditions when hunting with snow and full moon are also suitable for hunting from hides from a high seat. Additional feed is given to wild boars all year round. Hunting from the hides is used to hunt wild boars.

Hunting season: 01.06 – 30.09

Roe deer may be hunted using a calling hunt, hunting from hides or a stalking hunt. The best time for buck hunting is June-July when the grass layer has not yet grown high. Most popular forms of hunting are hunting from the hides and stalking hunt.

Hunting season: 15.09 – 15.12

The moose may be hunted by means of a calling hunt, hunting from hides or a stalking hunt from 15 September until 30 September, and also by a driven hunt from 1 October to 30 November. Calves may be hunted from 15 September until 15 December. In the beginning of the mating season, it is interesting to carry out a calling hunt imitating the bull’s voice. Adult animals weigh 300-500 kilograms on the average; the calves weigh around 100 kilograms. The most common hunting methods are stalking hunt and hunting from the hides.

Hunting season: 01.08 – 31.10

In Estonia, there are about 500-600 bears, their number does not fluctuate much. The bear mating season lasts from the middle of May to the middle of June. Hibernation usually begins in November and lasts until March-April. Bears reach sexual maturity at 3 years of age and have cubs at 4-5 years of age. Female bear has cubs every other year. The weight of an adult bear may exceed 200 kilograms. Bear, excepting the female bear with cubs, may be hunted by hunting from the hides from 1 August to 31 October.

Wolf

Hunting season: 01.11 – 28.02

The wolf mating season is in January-February. Pups are usually born in April. Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 2-3 years. In a pack, only the so-called alpha-couple has pups. Wolf may be hunted by means of a calling hunt, hunting from hides or a stalking hunt, as well as hunt using flag lines and hunt with hunting dogs from 1 November to 28 February. The average wolf weighs 35-45 kg, however there are heavier specimens. The most common hunting method is hunting from the hides and with bounding flag lines. The best time to hunt wolves is when the ground is covered with snow.

Hunting season: 01.12 – 29.02

The mating season of lynxes is in February-March. Usually 2-3 cubs are born in May and they stay with the mother for a year. Lynxes reach sexual maturity at the age of 2. They usually weigh 10-20 kg, but older animals may weigh even more than 30 kg. Lynx, excepting the female lynx with cubs, may be hunted by means of a calling hunt and hunting from hides. The best time for hunting lynxes is when the ground is covered in snow.

Hunting season: 01.08 – 15.04

Beaver is the largest rodent in Europe. They build lodges and dams and cut down trees. A beaver may stay underwater for up to 15 minutes. A family includes the adult male and female and their kits and yearlings. A beaver’s skin is extremely durable. Larger specimens may weigh over 30 kg. Beaver may be hunted by means of hunting from hides, a stalking hunt or by catching the animal using a dachshund or a terrier from 1 August to 15 April. Beaver hunting by means of hunting from hides or a stalking hunt is allowed throughout the year in case of repeated damages caused by beavers.
